What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Big meals for sure. Are you traveling to see family or is family coming to see you? While thoughts of this celebration a month ago were exciting, it is now upon us, and here comes the stress! Is the turkey big enough; is the house clean enough; will we make it on time? Where will we seat Uncle Ed? Can’t put him next to Aunt Betty… and on and on and on. So, where is your focus? Where is your heart this Thanksgiving?
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister Mary sat on the floor, listening to Jesus as he talked. But Martha was a jittery type, and was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Sir, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “Martha, dear friend, you are so upset over all these details! There is really only one thing worth being concerned about, Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her!”
Luke 10: 38–42
Wow—once again, Jesus helps us to refocus. Is it the dinner or the soul? Is it the turkey or the thanks? Are you a Martha or a Mary? So, today and tomorrow as we all prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s make sure we have the right focus.
We give You thanks, Lord. We are so grateful to You for the blessings in our lives. We pray that You guide us to maintain the right focus, the right attitude, the right heart—help us be more like Mary!
Have a thankful day.
