The key to success: you plan your work, and then you work your plan! However, if we keep our heads down just working on the plan, we may miss the opportunity of a lifetime. We need to stay open to the opportunities when they come along, especially if it is an opportunity that God lays out for us. We need to keep our hearts open. There is a saying that says, “If you want to see God laugh, tell him your plans!”
Later on as Jesus left the town he saw a tax collector—with the usual reputation for cheating—sitting at a tax collection booth. The man’s name was Levi. Jesus said to him, “Come and be one of my disciples!” So Levi left everything, sprang up and went with him.
Luke 5:27–28
What do you think Levi (we know him as Matthew) had planned for that week? He was at the office collecting taxes. I don’t think he was expecting a call from the Big Guy—do you? He wasn’t hanging with the religious crowd at all. But look at what he did: “So Levi left everything, sprang up and went with him.” How did he know that was the right thing to do? Was it in his heart to follow Jesus? Would you do that? Would I do that?
Today, we thank You, Lord, for giving us the excitement of following You—we pray that You keep our hearts open to Your direction and that when You say, “Come,” that we follow the lead of Matthew—that we have feet like rabbits and spring up, leaving everything behind!
Have a spring-in-your-step day.
