There are times when I am so confident—I can see outcomes so clearly. I just know it! This sounds arrogant, but it is not intended to be. We all have such moments when we see so clearly; athletes call it being “in the zone.” Baseball players describe it when they are at bat: while the ball is coming at them at greater than 90 miles per hour, it’s as if the ball is in slow motion—they hit it a mile out of the ballpark!
I think the same thing happens to all of us related to our purpose. Not very often, but on occasion, life will slow down enough for us to get a better view of what is going on, allowing us to ponder the direction we should go. We listen for the Lord to direct and guide us. We find ourselves reading scripture daily because we are motivated to be in His Word. We begin to find a purpose, or a direction, or a voice. We take a couple of steps forward and start to feel good, that the way we are heading is the right way. Then someone, usually someone who loves us, asks, “Are you sure you want to go that way?” We stop in our tracks. The doubt comes flying in.
From then on Jesus began to speak plainly to his disciples about going to Jerusalem, and what would happen to him there—that he would suffer at the hands of the Jewish leaders, that he would be killed, and that three days later he would be raised to life again. But Peter took him aside to remonstrate with him. “Heaven forbid, sir” he said. “This is not going to happen to you!” Jesus turned on Peter and said, “Get away from me, you Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are thinking merely from a human point of view, and not from God’s.”
Matthew 16:21–23
I don’t mean for the above passage to discourage us from seeking advice from family and friends. But Jesus could see very clearly; He knew the outcome, and nothing—not even His friend Peter—could dissuade Him of the direction to go. When you are in God’s Word, trust that He will take you where you are supposed to go, to do what you are supposed to do, and to conquer what you are supposed to conquer! Follow your heart. He has His plan for you; it is already written. You know it, you see it, you feel it. Now, just do it!
Lord, we thank You for placing Your plan on our hearts. It was there before we were even born. That is how glorious You are! The scriptures were written over 2,000 years ago, yet they were written for us for this day, for right now—what a miracle! We pray that we are guided to seek advice and counsel from those around us, but we also pray that Your voice is the loudest. Allow all of us to see clearly and find our purpose, because when we do, we hit the ball out of the park every time!
