Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
—Hebrews 11:1
What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead.
The Bible has some great examples of those who had faith—you can find them in Hebrews 11:1–40. Faith is also the feeling we have as our birthdays approach. We don’t know what we will get (we cannot see the unwrapped gift), but we have confident assurance that it will be for our benefit.
Faith gives us the courage to step out, to let go of the past before the future is certain. While we all want ironclad guarantees, they don’t exist. Before Israel went into battle, the prophets would ask God if He had given them victory already. That’s because God honors faith when it’s connected to what He’s promised.
So today, let’s pray that God helps us to strengthen our faith in Him, to better understand His promises, to step out with confidence into today because of His promises, although we do not see what is ahead—to know that today will be for our good.
